DIY Household Cleaner: Granite Countertops
Household cleaners without all the mysterious chemicals.
Do you ever wonder what unknown chemicals you are adding to your home when you clean? Me too.
For the past few years, I have slowly been working on eating cleaner, cutting out artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, and overly processed foods. I’ve started cooking more, eating out less, and learned to make a decent loaf of sourdough bread.
Now it’s time to start on my home. There have been some small changes I’ve made over the last year such as switching my laundry detergent, stop using candles and fragrances, and a few other small things… but I haven’t done much... until the other day when I ran out of granite countertop cleaner.
I decided to upcycle the bottle, because I really, really don’t need the pretty glass bottle from Amazon (even though I really, really want it) and make my own. I did a little research and found a simple recipe online and luckily; I had all the ingredients in my house.
You’ll need a bottle (plastic or glass) with a spray nozzle, water (boiled or distilled), rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl), Castille soap, and essential oils of your choosing (optional). A funnel makes things easier.
*Be sure to add them in the order below. If you add the soap before the water, it will make a bunch of bubbles.
DIY Granite Countertop Cleaner
Add 2 cups of boiled or distilled water to a bottle.
Add ½ cup rubbing alcohol.
Add 1 Tablespoon of Castille Soap.
Add essential oils (as much as you like until you get your desired scent. I didn’t use any because my soap was lavender-scented).
Shakey Shakey.
Spray on your granite countertops. Let sit for a few minutes and wipe away.
The product worked wonderfully. It got all the little crumbs and stickiness off my counters. It kept its alcohol scent which I didn’t love. I may add more essential oils next time I acquire some. But overall, I liked the product and liked that I know EXACTLY what is in the bottle.
Obviously, keep away from children and pets as this product is still dangerous if ingested. Let me know if you make it, what you think, and if anyone figures out if essential oils mask the alcohol small.

It all begins with an idea.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
